Description

With this tour, you will experience the exciting spice sellers and souks of Marrakech, journey into the high Atlas Mountains, and explore the High Atlas before trekking to the summit of North Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Toubkal.  We have programmed a trek which will allow you not only to see the village life of the Berbers in the High Atlas but which will allow steady acclimatization before ascending to the summit of Toubkal at 4167m. Much of the trekking route is on trails between the villages which are suitable for our mules. This means that the trail is not difficult underfoot for trekkers. The final ascent day follows zigzag trails on the screen. Some of the days are quite long, with quite a bit of ascent and descent, so trekking poles are recommended. This trip is perfect for those who want to trek with the mountain Berber people, and with mules carrying their luggage, while taking in an incredibly varied landscape.

** The best time to go: May – Jun – Jul – Aug – Sep – Oct

Details & Program

Marrakech Airport - Overnight in Marrakech

Hotel: RIAD SABAH or equivalent (breakfast only included)

Welcome to Morocco! Just outside the Airport in Marrakech; you will be warmly welcomed by your private driver who holds a sign with your name. You can already withdraw some Dirhams or exchange your foreign currency at the Airport. Your accommodation awaits you.

You are free for the rest of the day to explore the city. Marrakech is magical. Exotic, full of history and overwhelming, it is the most famous and visited city in Morocco. Known as the Red city mainly because of the predominant color of its buildings, it has been Morocco's capital in the past, represents the most important Imperial city, and boasts a perfect location right at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains.

This evening, we strongly recommend a visit to the amazing hectic Jemaa El Fna which comes alive after dark. You will experience a memorable mix of smells, sounds, and sights. For dinner, why not try one of the outdoor food stalls which offer a variety of food, and for the most adventurous, you can try the snails or the cooked sheep head.

** Approximate driving is 30mins (stops are NOT included).

Marrakech - Imi Oughlad - Tizi Oussem

Hotel: LOCAL GITE or equivalent (lunch & dinner included)

The trekking starts today. Your guide will meet you at your accommodation in Marrakech for an early morning transfer by road from Marrakech to Imi Oughlad (1375 m). You will meet muleteers and load baggage. You will then trek to Tizi Oussem (1720m) via the N'Tacht pass (2000 m). Approximatively 5hrs walking.

Tizi Ousseum is a Berber village in the High Atlas Mountains, with a nice local gite! It's a stop trekkers do on their way up to Toubkal. The view is breathtaking, but we can guarantee that the way can be challenging; so be ready with your comfortable shoes.

** Approximate driving is 1h30 hours (stops are NOT included).

Tizi Oussem waterfall

Hotel: LOCAL GITE or equivalent (lunch & dinner included)

This third day is a day to explore the area around Tizi Oussem which is your chance to get closer to the local life and maybe encounter some of local people working on their fields or trying to help their families bringing their daily needs. You will trek to a waterfall. Picnic lunch will be enjoyed in the open air. You will return to Tizi Oussem for a second night in a gite.

Tizi Oussem - Imlil

Hotel: LOCAL GITE or equivalent (breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

From Tizi Oussem you will go up to the M'Zig pass at 2490m. Then descend to a village near Imlil (from 1800m-1920m) where you stay overnight in a gîte. Approximatively 5hrs walking. Imlil village is yet another beautiful Berber town. It's the perfect site to learn more about the nature and diversity of the High Atlas Mountains. Your local guide is always at your side for anything you need. Keep him informed if you have specific wishes or questions.

Imlil - Toubkal Refuge

On this day, you will trek to Toubkal Refuge (3207m). It will take you approximately 5 to 6hrs walking to get to the Refuge. Clients must bring their own sleeping bag for this night. The refuge's architecture and layout of the buildings were designed to fit the particular nature of the massif of the High Atlas and respect the traditional Berber habitat. Feel free to walk around and maybe a brilliant idea would be to put your feet in cold water to get them relaxed especially that you have a wonderful challenge next morning.

Toubkal Ascension - Toubkal Refuge

Today, you will wake up well before dawn to begin your ascent of Mount Toubkal (4167m). Please keep in mind to walk on the line with your local guide and always inform him if you need to stop. He is at your disposal for your safety and also for any wishes or needs you have. Later you will descend to your starting point and stay overnight again at the Refuge. Approximatively 6-7hrs walking.

Toubkal Refuge - Imlil Village - Marrakech

You will have lunch in Imlil before your transfer back to Marrakech. You should arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon where you will spend in your accommodation. A great idea would be to get into a Moroccan Traditional Hammam (not included) to give your body the best local treatment needed!

** Approximate driving is 1h30 hours (stops are NOT included).
